Lions Club Deputies cleaned up the streets in downtown. Lions Club deputies roamed the streets looking for "perps" and citizen arrests were also made to break up the crime rings. After an arrest was made, a lawbreaker was given a time to appear before one of the judges: "Run 'Em Outta town" Rosemary Morris, "Flippin" George Popini, and "Reach for Your Wallet" Robin Waters.

At 10:30am the judges were waiting in front of Fat Boy's jail for the guilty parties to arrive. Some of the charges made against the bad guys included: running red lights, hitting pot holes, kicking the cat, or being perky or nice. Some seemed a little personal too, like Jeanne Pepler being charged with "starting Rumors".

Other reprobates included Steve Foreman, charged with being "pup-ular". And Nan Davis was caught for being a "karaoke junkie". Darryl Silva showed up in a red cape and was immediately charged with "impersonating a super hero". The shame of it all.

After the charges were read, the guilty took the adult libation of their choice (ahem) and were thrown into the cell for their 15 minute sentence. Prisoners were issued striped garb and given a tin can to collect their fines. No strip searches were deemed necessary since no TSA agents were arrested is the sweep.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Some prisoners labored in their cells, while others complained about the injustice of being incarcerated. A few rattled the tin cups against the bars and waited for their friends to put a few pesos in the cup. Passersby also tossed coins to the incarcerated hoping to shut them up.

Then Wayne Chiavacci thought he was above the law and bribed the judge "Reach for Your Wallet" Waters. She took the bait and the judge landed in the hoosegow with the other criminals. The chaos continued with the Most Wanted Man in Town… Tom Edwards being arrested by multiple citizens and three different deputies. In the end, the law of the Lions Club prevailed and everyone was able to pay their fines and get out of jail.

All and all, the day in front of Fat Boy's was great fun and a successful fundraising event. People joined in the meting out of Lion Club justice by waiting their turn before the judge, taking pictures of the incarcerated, and lots of belly laughing at the shenanigans. The Lions Club event raised critically needed funding for local vision clinics and children's eyeglasses. Justice was served and no one got out of jail free. Citizens of San Felipe can sleep well tonight.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; But that day was extraordinary; because the Lions Club of San Felipe and Mexico Living put on the largest event the community had ever seen, the 3rd Annual Blues and Arts Fiesta.

The stage was a behemoth of technology, soaring into the azure skies with a breathtaking mountain backdrop that looks like a picture postcard. About 2,000 people came from all over Mexico and the U.S. to hear great bands and cool music. As you entered San Felipe’s Baseball Field, a wonderful aroma from food vendors was wafting around the incoming crowd of spectators. Tortillas, enchiladas, empanadas, hamburgers, pizza, Bar-B-Que, fish tacos and fresh shrimp made your mouth water. Artisan booths went on and on around the perimeter with a dazzling array of paintings, sculpture, pottery, metal crafts and jewelry, including handcrafts from the indigenous Pai-Pai and Huichol Indians of Mexico.

The bands were introduced by MC Denny “Moondog” Flannigan and Co-Promoter John Pack. The bands included many award-winning groups starting with Chet and the Committee, San Diego Music Awards Best Blues Band nominee, 2007 and 2008. Second in line was Vatos Locos, 2008 Mexico Living Readers Poll winner for San Felipe Best Entertainment. Mofo Party Band kept the party going with Chicago Blues and West Coast Jump. Then the Backwater Blues Band came on strong and never stopped.

Next was Lisa Cee—and what a performance! Then as the sun was fading, Agave Blues took stage and performed one of their best ever—incredible! Shelle entertained the audience with her upbeat and sultry rhythm and blues sounds, and the audience ate it up! Back for the third year, Michele Lundeen & Blue Streak, once again, “laid it down” with their hot rockin’ roadhouse blues, classic R&B and funky soul. As the show was winding down to a close, Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys sent the die-hards home with their raw soul and groove that doesn’t quit.

The Grand Marshal for this year was none other than Sal Fish, CEO of SCORE International. For over 40 years the Score Baja 1000, 500 and 250 off-road races have attracted professional racers, movie stars and celebrities that are legendary in the Baja, and Sal Fish is the legend maker. It was a natural fit of sand, sea, music, food, arts and a caring community.

The reason for all this community effort is to help fund the health and medical projects of the San Felipe B.C. Lions Club, which includes a special Lions project, Sonshine Hacienda, a home for abused or abandoned children. Currently children, whose parents are in crisis, are bussed 125 miles away to Mexicali, where there is little room for them, and a frightening experience to be so far from their homes. The new two-story facility will house 50 children and will hopefully be completed by year end.

None of it would have been possible without the 150 volunteers from the Lions Club, Mexico Living and the San Felipe community.

If you missed it, don’t let it happen again!
Find the Blues and Arts Fiesta 2010 information at www.BluesandArts.com.
San Felipe BC Lions Club can be reached at SanFelipeBCLlionsClub@gmail.com.

For more information on Sonshine Hacienda, call (686) 577-0795 or email missionaries2@yahoo.com.

Fiesta de Bomberos in the Park

All San Felipe B C Lions Club Members,

SAVE THE DATE OF SATURDAY MAY 9, 2009!!!!!

May 9th, 2pm at the park next to the fire station. Interestingly, in addition to people from the San Felipe area and those coming south from the United States just for this open air concert, the charity event proved to be a magnet for many from Rosarito and Ensenada. Given the quality of the festival, it seems a sure bet that even more West-coasters will be there in 2010.

According to John Pack, publisher and editor of Mexico Living, and erstwhile Master of Ceremonies for the event, “More than $66,000 was raised for the Lions Club, and the attendance was approximately 1750 for the day!”

His enthusiasm was echoed by Rosarito’s own Polo Valencia, Polo’s Gallery, whose extensive art exhibition was one of the highlights of the festival. “We love this event,” said Polo, adding, “It gets a positive crowd that is happy to be here and people who are happy to support the arts—music, painting, everything!”

The Ensenada contingent in attendance seemed to agree. “The weather was perfect, the line-up was great and the bands were excellent -- especially Lisa Cee. We’ll be back!” noted Richard George, a first-time San Felipe visitor. Other performers included Agave Blues, MoFo Party Band, Vatos Locos, Michele Lundeen and Blues Streak, Johnny Mastro and Mama’s Boys, The Backwater Blues Band, Shelle Blue and Chet and The Committee.

Event proceeds will benefit The Sonshine Hacienda and The Flying Samaritans Medical Clinics. Sonshine Hacienda`s goal is to aid the social services of San Felipe in being able to place abused and/or abandoned children in a safe place, while they and their family situation can be evaluated more in depth. Flying Samaritans is a volunteer organization that operates free medical clinics in Baja California. Doctors, dentists, nurses, translators, pilots and support personnel drive or fly to clinics in private aircraft. The Flying Samaritans has four basic missions: primary care, specialty care, education and emergency care.

According to Pack, Mexico Living is proud to work with Lions Club International, which has a stated goal of creating and fostering a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international particpation. There is no doubt that the San Felipe Blues & Arts Fiesta is achieving that. While this number may sound alarming, the good news is that these problems can be detected through a comprehensive dilated eye exam and are easily corrected with the use of prescriptive eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses.

May is Healthy Vision Month, a national eye health observance in the United States. The focus this year is to reduce uncorrected visual impairment due to refractive errors. Healthy Vision Month is sponsored by the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) of the National Eye Institute. Lions Clubs International is a member of NEHEP and works closely with them to promote healthy vision in our communities.

In order to help your Lions Club educate the public about healthy vision month and the role regular eye exams play in maintaining good eye health, NEHEP has developed a variety of resources available in a Healthy Eyes ToolKit. It includes a variety of resources such as web links, e-cards, print and radio public service announcements (PSAs), sample text messages, drop-in articles, fact sheets, and downloadable posters, bookmarks, and stickers that can be used to promote the importance of eye exams. http://www.healthyvision2010.nei.nih.gov/hvm/ and http://www.nei.nih.gov/healthyeyestoolkit/

Lions Clubs play an important part in eye health promotion in their communities. Please join LCI and NEI in our efforts to elevate vision health as a priority. Please let us know if you have participated in an activity to promote eye health in May. We want to hear from you. lcif@lionsclubs.org

Sincerely,
Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya
LCIF Chairperson, 2008-09

Adventures of Ambassador of Good Will Jody Hebard of the Loomis Lions Clubof the Loomis Lions Club

The adventures of Ambassador of Good Will
Jody Hebard of the Loomis Lions Club.

Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 9:40 AM from the head of The Nile River
Lion Jody's unedited email sent to Lion Buzz below:

"Tuesday was one of the best and, also the hardest of days. Visited a school by myself and then went trekking thru the jungle to visit various houses. It was VERY hard, but I made it. Yesterday we got up early and traveled to the village of Iganga, you can see it on the map. We met four Lions there and went to an orphanage for blind children. About ten more Lions met us there. Afterward, we went into the village and had lunch at their meeting place. It was very impressive and, even Tim (son Tim Edwards) thought it was pretty cool. We had lunch and I gave out the glasses. (Box of adult glasses from Folsom Project for the Visually Impaired) Very appreciative. There were about 15 there.. One of their lions is an eye doctor and he will be having a clinic at the end of May, so the glasses were right on time.

Shows that Lions are willing to go and do what it takes to help the world in any way we can!
Supplies by Jack Morris from our Loomis Twinn Club

Blues & Arts Fiesta Reviews

Hear and See what they are all saying...

Mexico Living: SUCCESS! We also thank their optometrist, Dr Efrain and the students he brought down from Mexicali to assist him, for their help.

Lions Club member, Karen Lewis, did a fantastic job of coordinating the clinic and with the help of many Lions Club volunteers they were able to do histories and eye chart exams for 144 people, adults, children of all ages and several elderly and disabled. Of those seen only 28 did not need further treatment or glasses. With the assistance of a Lions Club member and nurse, Jacquie Cole, Dr Efrain was able to see 88 patients, many who were fitted with eye glasses donated to the Lions Club. He also screened for those in need of corrective eye surgeries, such as cataracts and other eye problems. Those in need will have corrective surgeries by the Flying Samaritans eye surgeon on their next visit to San Felipe on May 21st through May 23rd. During their visit the Lions Club will hold another Free Eye Exam Clinic with their optometrist who will accompany the surgeon, nurses and pilots from Modest,CA on Saturday May 23rd at California Optical.

Nearly 170 people came Saturday to be seen for exams and those whose histories were taken and preliminary eye chart examinations done, but not seen by the optometrist, will be the first to be seen on May 23rd. The large group of people were quite patient as well as helpful during the long wait and the children were well entertained at 3 tables dedicated for arts and crafts for their enjoyment. Thanks to great planning by Jan and Frank Gates, who took charge of helping the children create their "masterpieces" everything went pretty smoothly. This little girl was in needof special anti seizure medication and although DIF had been treatingthe child their supply of the medication was running out. They had nofunds to purchase more of the medication. The family was desperateand Irene approached the Lions Club for help

When Dr Chiavacci was not able to obtain the medication in Yuma, theLions Club contactedThe Flying Samaritan, doctors from Modesto, CA who visit our community2 to 3 times a year to do surgical procedures for our need in SanFelipe. They were able to find the medication and send it to theLions Club to then donate it to DIF for the child's treatments. Thequantity they were able to supply should take care of this child'sneeds for a year. A happy ending to what could have been tragicstory.

The San Felipe BC Lions Club is dedicated to helping the needs of lessfortunate in our community. Many of these small happy endings aren'tshared but I felt this one was one that needed to be told.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The Rotary Club has proposed that our two clubs join our volunteer forces on March 13-15, 2009 and collect donations at specific roadside areas in San Felipe with all combined donations to go to Cruz Roja.

As you may or may not know the local Cruz Roja is in dire financial straits. There is a whole lot more information that can and should be prudently gathered and shared about Cruz Roja, its operations and responsibilities all of which is necessary but will take time, probably more time to delve into satisfactorily than we have at least for now. While they apparently do have management and/or financial and staffing problems it seems there is an immediate and urgent community need to be served by having the organization operational. Whether we all understand or even agree what Cruz Roja is all about, at least according to the Mexican Government they are the front line first responders to any medical emergencies that require stabilization and safe transport to medical care. They respond to all emergency calls regardless of social or financial status of the victim and do so free of charge.

It should not go without saying that many of us in San Felipe have been and still may be critical of some of their past or present operations, practices or methods of doing business. Some of these were discussed openly at our meeting, in particular the concern that donations were properly spent on operations and that their financial statements and books were open to review. One of the most obvious to the Lions Club was what we view as a total breakdown of the integrity of the Cruz Roja Response in San Felipe when our very own Lions Club Vice-President Cliff White sought assistance at their door last year on April 20 and was literally left on their door step near death with a heart attack. It was only after other passers by saw him lying there and banged on the door until someone opened it and when they did try to respond there was no oxygen to revive him. This is a very serious breach of their community and humanitarian responsibility that fortunately for Cliff, his family, friends and Cruz Roja did not turn into fatal situation.

Both the Rotary and Lions Club feel that if we do use our volunteers to collect donations that Cruz Roja should routinely make their financial statements available to both clubs so that a review of the donations and expenditures can be tracked. I do not mean to imply any improprieties or illegal conduct has occurred and I have no specific knowledge of any misappropriations of funds or even mismanagement. It just seems that if groups are willing to help with financial assistance they are entitled to adequate financial information and feedback from within Cruz Roja and I am told that information is available to us.

What this all comes down to is simply this, the Rotary Club feels that by joining forces with the Lions Club we could make an impact on our community in several ways. One by demonstrating that our organizations can and do work together for the betterment of the community and if we can work together successfully other members of the community can join in to help as well, for the mutual benefit of all of us. We all need this service, we all have access to it, we all need to support it.

As President of the Lions Club I am recommending that we provide six volunteers to join together with the Rotary Club and help collect donations for the Cruz Roja during The San Felipe 250 SCORE race weekend, March 13-15. That we begin with this one commitment for now at least until we have a better understanding of Cruz Roja's Operations and needs and it can be successfully demonstrated that what we are trying to do is beneficial. So I hereby submit this to the Board of Directors as a motion and ask for discussion, and your vote, yea or nay as soon as possible but please before 5:00pm Tuesday February 17, 2009. Please feel free to call or email any questions or concerns that you may have. Time is of the essence.

Saludos y buen dia,
Hal "Paco" Clark
President,
San Felipe B C Lions Club

Blues & Arts 2009: KKJZ Fundraising Drive Promotional

KKJZ 88.1 FM which is America's #1 most listened- to Jazz and blues radio station in the country servicing Southern California as well as worldwide through the internet.

KKJZ is member-supported radio station and is funded primarily by membership and corporate contributions. In the month of September we inducted 5 new members and have received applications from several future members adding to our membership of 90 at this time. This growth is exciting as we continue to serve the needs of the community of San Felipe.

Some of our fundraising projects such as our Penny Press sales have continued through the summer and as the season begins we now get into full swing. “The Paws” food wagon will the serving breakfast every Saturday morning at the Cachanilla Swap meet and will be at the Pete’s Camp Poker Run on October 11th serving breakfast early in the day then hotdogs and hamburgers, popcorn and snow cones later. The tickets are $25 or $250 pesos each and will include a drink at each bar (choice of a margarita, beer, soda or $1.00 off a bar drink), your playing cards at each location and a Spaghetti Dinner. The dinner will be donated by Cliff and Sues Los Arcos Restaurant and will be served from “The Paws” food wagon in front of Fandangos after the Trot. For those “Trotters” who want to enhance their chances, you will be able to purchase one extra card at your stop at Fat Boys. Door prizes, including frozen turkeys will be given away so you don’t want to miss the “Turkey Trot Poker Walk” on November 15th. The Sonshine Hacienda is a special needs work in progress to provide a home for children at risk because of abuse, neglect, abandonment or who have been orphaned. Pastor Gary Lewis, now vice president of the Lions Club, and his wife, Karen, head up this mission. When the project is finished it will provide a home for 50 children and help them to grow to be physically, mentally and spiritually stronger. Many donations for this mission have come directly from our generous Lions Club members and from other Lions Clubs in the US and Canada. $1,000 from the proceeds of the Turkey Trot Poker Walk will go to benefit the Sonshine Hacienda as well.

The Flying Samaritans is another project that the Lions Club is proud to be working with. This group of dedicated doctors, nurses and pilots fly here 3 times a year to give of their time and expertise, at their own expense, to help those in need in our community. Last week Lions members registered 44 patients who were then seen by Doctor Marquez with the assistance of local nurse, Blanc Hafcamp for prescreening at Central de Salud. On Friday the Flying Sam Doctors and nurses will see those patients selected and on Saturday will perform Orthopedic Surgery to help those with the greatest needs. Your help is needed to make these events a success and we urge you to participate by volunteering your time or contributing services or funds. Should you have friends and neighbors who are not Lions but wish to serve their community, let them know that they are welcome and urged to volunteer.

    The Paws That Refresh

The Swap Meet at Cachanilla will open for the season on Saturday, August 30th. The Paws will there offering a great menu for hungry meet-goers. Bob and Debbie Lux, and Rodger DeVaul are to be commended for working every weekend last season. To be fair, we need at least three volunteers who will work 4 hours every other Saturday and give them some relief. Training will be provided and you will have an opportunity to meet and talk to friends and neighbors who attend the swap meet.

    Pete's Camp Poker Run - October 12

Raphael Navarro has asked the Lions to man their Pit Stop, serving beer, macaroni salad and cooking chicken. We plan to have two shifts and need several people to volunteer for that duty. The Paws will be at the starting and finish line area and will need several more volunteers to cook and serve racers and their fans. Pete's Poker Run in October 2007 was the kick-off event for The Paws and was the food wagon's best selling event.

    Flying Samaritans

The Sams will be flying into San Felipe to offer medical services to the community October 9 - 13.

Screening and examinations must be done by the end of September:

We need volunteers right away to prepare for their visit. We need to get the word out to the local communities, contact schools, churches and social agencies. We need to set up and coordinate screening for potential patients. We will need many volunteers (preferably multi-lingual) to help make this visit another success.

October 10 - 12 at San Felipe Hospital

Volunteers (preferably bi-lingual) will be needed to sign-in pre-screened patients and provide assistance between waiting patients and the The Flying Samaritans' medical team.

    Turkey Trot /Poker Walk - November 15

Lee Martin, again, has a need for volunteers to work this event. Not only is it fun but the Lions have committeed $1,000 of the proceeds to Sonshine Hacienda, a home for at-risk children. Cliff White has offered spaghetti dinners with salad and bread for the estimated 125-140 "trotters."

    Blues and Arts Fiesta

Although the Fiesta is planned for March 28, 2009, we need to start working on the event immediately. John and Rachel Pack will again coordinate the B&A fest and will provide information soon on the various committees you can sign up for.

REMEMBER YOUR PLEDGE AND THE LIONS CREED: "WE SERVE"

PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POST AND LET US KNOW WHICH EVENTS
YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER YOUR SERVICES.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

LIONS CLUB SAN FELIPE B.C.

MINUTES

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Cliff and Sue's Los Arcos Restaurant

The Board of Directors of Lions Club San Felipe B.C. (SF Lions) met at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Cliff and Sue=s Los Arcos Restaurant.

Vice President Gary Lewis (Gary L) called the meeting to order in the absence of President Hal APaco@ Clark.

Directors Nate Morace and Sheri Pollack have moved back to the U.S. and on August 7th resigned their positions as Fundraising Co-chairs. An email was immediately sent notifying the Board of the resignations and a recommendation by the President to appoint John and Rachel Pack to fill the Fundraising Co-chairs posts. They will retain their positions as Co-Chair of the Blues and Arts Fiesta. A quorum of directors confirmed the appointments prior to this meeting.

Vice President Lewis welcomed new directors John and Rachel.

Also, on August 11th, citing business obligations which will require her full attention, Audrey Coffman resigned as Membership Co-chair and her assignment on the Special Projects Committee. Those posts have not yet been filled.

Directors present were Gary Lewis, Elayne Caldwell, Gary Dilley (Gary D) Rodger DeVaul, Robin Kissee (Robin K), Bob Lux, Debbie Lux, Lee Martin, John and Rachel Pack and Cliff White. Consiglieri Andy McIntosh was also present. Directors not at the meeting were: Paco Clark, Mike Miller, Barbi DeVaul, Debbie Lux, Kathy Preppernau and Robin Waters.

Also present were Darcy and Gene Jensen, Audrey and Dan Coffman and Charlie Martin.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Lee moved that the Minutes be accepted and Rachel seconded the motion. The Minutes were approved.

TREASURER=S REPORT

Note: The General Fund monies are listed in U.S. dollars (US).

The Fundraising Fund monies are listed in Pesos (MX).

Robin K, acting Treasurer, standing in for Mike Miller during his absence, reported a balance of $13,141.57 in the General Fund, including $1,544.25 in the membership reserve and $5,150.34 in the Blues and Arts reserve. The Fundraising Fund account has a balance of $8,318.81 MX.

The attached treasurer=s report was approved following a motion by Elayne and seconded by John.

OLD BUSINESS

The Paws That Refresh - Bob said that The Paws is starting up again this coming weekend at the Cachanilla Swap Meet. He urged everyone to come out and visit. Bob said that last year he and Debbie, as well as Rodger worked the Swap Meet every week. He asked that we try to get volunteers to assist by working The Paws every other week. The request will be made to the members at the General Meeting that night. Later in the meeting, Rodger said The Paws needs another sign on the backside of the wagon. Gary D and Rodger offered to price and get a 4 x 8" banner. Rodger thought it might cost about $75.00.

Turkey Trot - November 15th has been selected as the date of the next Turkey Trot, Lee reported. She has commitments from six bars: Fandango, Bandidos, Fat Boys, Beachcomber, the Lighthouse and Miramar. Lee was told that new members Vanice French and Penny Nast would like to volunteer to work the Turkey Trot. Their names will be added to a volunteer sign-up sheet which Lee will circulate at the General Meeting.

Blues and Arts - John reported that over the summer he has been talking with new bands who are very interested in participating. Many of the bands which played in April are also interested in returning. Media kits and sponsor packages are being put together and John said they should be ready by our next meeting on September 11th. He will also have a list of committees to sign up volunteers. Anyone who headed a committee this past year are welcome to chair the same committees. John said he would like to begin sending out sponsor and media kits as soon as they are ready to go. John and Rachel will present a new logo for Board approval. He suggested that we do more regarding artists, perhaps presenting the artists between acts. A discussion ensued regarding the showing of videos or movies at the next B&A fest. Rodger reported that he contact the people who have worked on outdoor movies on the Malecon to see what would be involved. Gary D said that we must have everything done by January 1st and John added that we must set sponsor deadlines.

A cd of the last B&A fest was made and John asked the board if we should mass produce cd=s for sale at upcoming events. It will cost approximately $1500 for 1,000 cd=s produced by a major video company who will do the re-mixing and mastering. Gary D moved and Robin K seconded the motion that we go ahead and order the production of cd=s with a cap of $2,000.

Penny Press - Bob reported that it has been a very slow summer for sales of penny press items but with the snowbirds returning we plan to press more pennies next week, coat them to prevent tarnishing and will restock the boards.

Merchandise Sales - Gary L noted the absence of Barbi, who has taken on the job as keeper and sales of merchandise (shirts, pins, etc.), so there was no merchandise report. However, Rodger, who set up merchandise sales at various locations asked if we can get a couple of Easy-Up canopies. John said that Baja Nueva have a number of Easy-Ups that they are trying to sell. They might be persuaded to donate a couple. Darcy Jensen said she will be in Riverside (CA) next week and she can go to the Easy-Up company and ask for a donation. Rachel suggested that a backdrop display screen be set up B perhaps using chain-link fencing or a peg board of some kind. Gary D moved that Gene Jensen make a display board and upon a second by Darcy, the motion passed. Gary D said that the Lions have an account with Arturo Esquivias at Maderas De San Felipe and suggested that Gene get materials from them.

Flying Samaritans. Walter Shimon of the Sams called Gary D recently and Walter is concerned that he hasn=t heard from people here. Gary confirmed that member Carlos Kuttler will donate the hospital for the Sams visit. He has been unable to reach Karen Bradley to confirm that she will coordinate the visit but he is confident that she will offer her services. By September 11, Gary added, we should have a date for pre-screening. We will need to provide the Delgado with the names of the medical team and pilots three to four weeks in advance of their visit in order to get visas for the Sams.

Lions Mexicali Parade. District B-1 Lions have set October 11th as the date for the parade. Because that Saturday is a very busy one for the Lions, Gary D said he talked to Salvador Sanchez, PR coordinator with the District and asked if the parade can be changed to October 19th. Salvador said he will try to get the date changed. We would like 20 to 30 members to march in the parade and possibly have The Paws in the parade. We would also like to take SF Lions promotional materials to distribute. Salvador plans to be at our September 11th meeting, Gary said.

Pete=s Camp Poker Run. Pete=s Camp proprietor and Rafael Navarro (a Lions member) last year donated $1,000 to the Lions. He would like our club to work the pit-stop at the October 11th Pete=s Camp Poker Run, selling beer, macaroni salad and making and selling chicken. The Paws will again be at the starting and finish line area selling food and refreshments. Gary asked that we send out an email asking for volunteers.

Lions Paw Prints - A Newsletter. John announced that the new club=s newsletter, Paw Prints will be operational on September 1st. It is an ideal vehicle to provide notice to members regarding volunteer opportunities. Gary said Elayne should work with Rachel and John on setting up the volunteer site.

Vending Machines. Gary D reported that, while he was in Spokane this past month, he talked to a friend who has three quarter vending machines (for gumballs, candy, etc.) which he offered to donate to the Club. The machines will be in San Felipe within a month or so. Gary D said he will talk to Oxxo, who plans to eventually have eight stores in San Felipe (they now have three) to find out if they will allow us to set up the machines in their stores. At a previous meeting, Gene was appointed to oversee stocking the machines and collecting the money.

Sonshine Hacienda. Gary L reported that building is progressing well. Cement has been pored and the beams are going up in a week to ten days and after that the second story -- which will contain e a multi-purpose room and offices -- can go up. Plumbing and electrical have been donated. Gary L said that he would like to invite Lions members to visit sometime in October. Gary D suggested that, when the Sams arrive, perhaps they can be given a private screening. Gary D then moved that $1,000 of the proceeds from the Turkey Trot go to Sonshine Hacienda. Lee seconded the motion and the Board approved it. Gary D said we can list Sonshine as a beneficiary on our Turkey Trot posters and entry blanks.

Donation Requests. Gary D said that Cliff talked to a representative of the Women=s Abuse Center B he thought they will need about $570 worth of medicines and supplies. The request was turned over to Rodger who will provide the information to the Special Project Committee.

Grant Requests. Dave Dietrich has asked that the Sonshine Hacienda provide him with a prospectus and he will begin work on grant requests.

Lions Welcome Sign. The Delgado has approved the placement of the sign and it is ready to be put up at the Arches. Gary L and Gene will put the sign up and photos will be taken for Paw Prints.

ADJOURNMENT - There being no other business to discuss, Rachel moved that the meeting be adjourned, Lee seconded the motion and the meeting closed at 5:40 p.m.

Prepared by Elayne Caldwell

Secretary

Message from the President

Presidents Message

Welcome to the first edition of the San Felipe B C Lions Club Newsletter, “PAW PRINTS”. This publication represents not a beginning but a continuation of the landmark work performed by our club in its first year of organization under the development and direction of our imminent Immediate Past President Gary Dilley. Gary and his capable officers Cliff White - Vice President, Elayne Caldwell – Secretary, Robin Kissee – Treasurer and all of the directors and committee chairpersons toiled tirelessly to achieve amazing results for a new club. I would like to acknowledge all of their efforts and ask that you join me in this expression of appreciation and gratitude of their accomplishments.

Some of the major accomplishments include teaming up with the Flying Samaritans out of Modesto, California to provide free medical services to those less fortunate citizens in our little fishing village of San Felipe. Together we did hundreds of eye examinations and dispensed more than 740 pairs of eyeglasses and performed 47 more complicated surgical procedures.

Members Gary and Karen Lewis shared their devotion to the creation of a home for displaced children in San Felipe. There are no facilities currently available locally and children removed from their parents for various reasons are sent 195 kilometers away to Mexicali for temporary care. They succeeded in convincing their fellow Lions that theirs is a worthy cause and we are on board to assist in the building of the facility in Las Minitas and eventually in contributing to the operation of the home.

Gary’s idea to seize the opportunity of a donation of a used travel trailer from Gary and Karen Lewis resulted in the creation of the “Paws That Refresh” food services trailer that will continue to generate income to the club for many years to come. That income results primarily from the hard work of the Paws Crew headed by Roger DeVaul and Bob Lux.

Another ingenious income opportunity was created with Gary’s donation of the “Penny Press’ and the on-going sales of San Felipe Charms and Souvenirs by the Penny Press Team headed by Bob and Debbie Lux.

Lee Martin and her exuberant Turkey Trot Team has already held two wildly successful poker walks linking some of the finer drinking establishments along our downtown business district know locally as the Malecon. This annual event is and will continue to be an important to element in our fundraising efforts.

When club members became aware that a local primary school was in such poor physical condition and that lack of government funding meant that the children would be sitting in broken desks in a classroom looking up through holes in the ceiling and roof at the sky surrounded by cracked windows and walls of peeling paint, Gary rallied the club to action. The entire school building was re-roofed, painted inside and out and new electrical and air conditioning was installed in time to start the school year.

Gary also marshaled the enthusiasm of members Dan Slepian, Scott Parkman and Sam Grubb in bringing donated surplus medical equipment and supplies valued in excess of $500,000 to San Felipe and distributed the desperately needed items to the local medical community.

I would like to especially thank John and Rachel Pack, Publishers of Mexico Living Magazine for their valuable contribution to the club in many forms, including free advertising for our events and particularly for their participation as co-promoters of the 2nd Annual Blues and Arts Fiesta and publishers of this newsletter. I also want to welcome them to their new seats on the Board of Directors beginning August 2008.

I am thankful and grateful to all of the members of our club who have put so much effort and personal resources into the success of our first year. I commend you and ask for your continued support as we move into a new era.

Hal “Paco” Clark
President,
San Felipe B C Lions Club

Letter from Immediate Past President Gary Dilley

The San Felipe B.C. Lions Club was chartered in January 2007 with over 50 members and by July 2008 the membership level rose to over 80.

In February of 2007 our club first assisted the Flying Samarians and at the end of this year we will mark the 5th medical clinic that we have co-hosted.

We now have a slit eye lamp that has been used at the Flying Sam eye clinics. We have the Kauai Lions Club to thank for their wonderful donation and our member Jack Rusch and his sister for getting them in touch with us. Karen Bradley has made the Flying Sams visits much easier and she has had the help of other Lion members Karen Lewis, Robin Waters, Bev Mostowy and Carlos Kuttler as well as non members Kristy Deegen and Dr. Marquez.

Gary Lewis of Sonshine Hacienda donated a trailer to the club that was to become "The Paws That Refresh”. Changing the Paws from a trailer to a food service wagon was one of the two major projects the San Felipe Lions Club accomplished over the summer of 2007. John Hanna was instrumental in creating the finished product. He was able to do it with help of Gene Hoshell, Andy Mcintyre, Gene Jensen, Bob and Debbie Lux as well as a large number of other helpers.

Gene Jensen was also involved in our second project of the summer, Re-modeling the school in Las Minitas. He had the help of Rick Wagoner and the professional services of Oscar Parra and his construction crew.

Although the club nas only been existence 15 months we have had two very successful annual poker walk fundraisers we now call the “Turkey Trot”. Thanks to Lee Martin, Sheri Pollack, Debbie Lux and the many others that volunteered to put it all together.

In October of 2007 we initiated the "Paws that Refresh" at Pete’s Camp Poker Run. Bob Lux was in charge and has managed the Paws through out all of the many events, the shrimp festival, the Home Show, the Blues & Arts Fiesta and most every Saturday at the swap meet at the Cachinilla. He has had the help and support of Darcy and Gene Jensen as well as Rodger and Sheri DeVaul.

Bob Lux has also taken on the responsibility of the clubs Penny Press machine and the maintenance of the Penny sale display boards located around town. Debbie, Andy Mcintyre, and Charlie Martin have helped in preparing pennies for the boards and for sale at the events during the last 15 months.

The second annual Blues and Arts Fiesta was a huge success and we thank Sam and Diane Grubb for passing this event to our club. There were more volunteers than members of our club. And each and every one of them was needed to make this event happen. However without the time and effort that John and Rachel Pack put into the Blues and Arts Fiesta, plus the expense of all of the advertising that they donated in "Mexico Living Magazine” none of this could have been achieved.
Or the dedication of Hal “Paco” Clark, who put all of the local sponsors together, and the valuable help of Octavio Ascolani arranged for Tecate to become a major sponsor of the Blues and Arts Fiesta.

As well as Robin Waters who started in September of last year locating artists all through out the Baja and filled the artists booths at the Fiesta.

I am grateful for all of the hard work you put into making this a successful event. Every one that I have talked with enjoyed the Festival and we are already looking to the third annual Blues and Arts fest, to be held on March 28, 2009.

In closing I would like to thank the large number of members that I have come to rely on, if your name was not mentioned today it does not in any way mean that your efforts were unappreciated. It has taken a group effort to bring San Felipe Lions to where it is today. I would like to personally thank our Secretary Elayne Caldwell, Treasurer Robin Kissee and my Vice President Cliff White.

Thank You.

Gary Dilley,

President 2007-2008

San Felipe B.C. Both within this past week have found it necessary to tender their resignations to focus their energy and resources on their respective personal business endeavors. Both will remain active members along with their respective spouses and as such have pledged to make whatever contributions they can in the future. On behalf of the board of directors and the membership of the San Felipe B C Lions Club we wish them well and godspeed health, wealth and happiness.

Welcome Paw Prints Team

Welcome to the entire Paw Prints Team: John, Rachel, Robin and Kathy. I have got this started but I will leave it up to the rest of you to set up the layout and design so it really works for us in gathering all of the material we need such as articles, photos, notes, ideas, calendars, etc; for publishing the Paw Prints. You each have access to post but any club member or anyone else for that matter can read our content. Feel free to be as creative as you like and treat this like our work shop. I of course intend to rely on John and Rachel to guide us as to the best utilizations of this blog and welcome comments and suggestions from all of you. Essentially the tasks breakdown as follows: John and Rachel will design, layout and publish the Paw Prints and Robin and Kathy as the clubs Public Relations Team will provide the content. Just do it and let's have fun.
